Saturn

Designed in 1957 and officially presented at the 1958 Padua Fair, the Saturno sofa represents one of Gastone Rinaldi's most famous and avant-garde works for Rima.

Technical Profile and Innovation

The Saturno sofa is characterized by an agile and expressive metal structure that radically distances it from the traditional, austere and volumetric upholstered furniture of the period. Rinaldi conceived the sofa with a strong focus on modularity, initially motivated by the need to facilitate shipping in separate parts. The technical solution is based on a steel flat bar arc of a circle (while the Thema re-edition of the 1980s would replace this flat bar with a tubular steel profile of rectangular cross-section) supporting the backrest and a ring structure for the seat, utilizing the leaf spring principle to ensure the elasticity and comfort of the seat.

Historical Recognition

The importance of the Saturno in the international design landscape is evidenced by its inclusion in the permanent collection of MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York. This recognition consecrates it as an icon of post-war Italian design.
